Posted @withrepost@curiouswithjvn All too familiar today in the United States is the occurrence of gun violence.  Back in 2016 @jvn was joined by @everytown to discuss gun safety, the second amendment, what exactly the NRA is, and what we can do to help promote gun safety. Today- with the recent tragedies around the country, Shannon Watts founder of @momsdemand puts out a call to action to listeners and all who can make a difference to join a rally this weekend to call on our senators to act. For more information on how to help and to listen to the episode, please visit the link in bio.  Text RALLY to 644-33 and special thanks to @everytown @momsdemand @shannonrwatts for the update. Shannon Watts is a mother of five who, prior to founding Mom’s Demand Action, was a stay-at-home mom and former communications executive. The day after the Sandy Hook tragedy, Shannon started a Facebook group with the message that all Americans can and should do more to reduce gun violence.  The online conversation turned into a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that protect people form gun violence.

New stops added to my book tour for Fight Like a Mother. Join me this Friday in Charleston. More information at FightLikeaMother.org

Today’s amazing in Iowa - an event that included 16 presidential candidates and over 1,000 attendees - was all due to the hard work behind the scenes of staff and volunteers who will never get the spotlight, but deserve all the credit. Honored every day to work shoulder to shoulder with some of the most talented, committed and passionate people on earth.

Sixteen candidates are confirmed to attend our Presidential on Saturday in Des Moines. Come learn about the candidates’ plans to move us toward a future free from gun violence. Starting at 8 central, the forum will be livestreed on @momsdemand’s Facebook and Twitter and @Everytown’s Facebook and Twitter. To attend, become a member and RSVP: every.tw/2GTRHlF

Posted @withrepost@momsdemand In America, gun violence never takes a break. ⠀ ⠀ While Congress is on recess, let’s send a clear message that we will not stand for inaction on gun violence. Join us in your community for a event on 8/17 or 8/18. ⠀ ⠀ Find an event near you at the link in our bio.

After learning about a horrific act of mass gun violence in El Paso, Texas, Brenda Moss — a Virginia @momsdemand volunteer whose son, Shawn, was killed by gun violence — had a powerful message for nearly 2,000 volunteers who gathered in D.C. for our annual leadership training this weekend.⠀ ⠀ LISTEN, THEN FIGHT LIKE A MOTHER. ⠀ ⠀ At the link in my bio, send an email to your senators and to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: Demand they pass NOW.

Posted @withrepost@juliannemoore This beautiful sweater was gifted to me by @rachellehruska and @shannonrwatts in honor of Shannon’s book . Shannon inspired my activism in the gun violence movement and I joined @momsdemand and @everytown. I have met so many amazing activists and heroic survivors of gun violence since I became involved, and we, like all of you, are devastated by the horrific shootings this weekend. My heart is broken for these families and I mourn this senseless loss of life. The gun reform movement will need all of us, and ALL OF OUR VOTES. Hold your lawmakers responsible. Call your senator now and demand a vote on universal background checks. Join us. Text CHECKS to 644-33 I send my love to and 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

Hundreds of @MomsDemand and @studentsdemand volunteers are outside the White House right now demanding a Senate vote on background checks in honor of El Paso and all gun violence victims. Leave voicemails for your Senators NOW. Text CHECKS to 644-33.

TAKE ACTION: The House of Representatives passed a bill to require background checks on all gun sales. Now, the Senate must act. In honor of El Paso, text CHECKS to 644-33 to be connected with your Senators and tell them to act on background checks.

This is the NRA’s worst nightmare. Nearly 2,000 @MomsDemand and @studentsdemand leaders learning to organize to end gun violence and the gun lobby’s influence. This is only half of our leadership team and a fraction of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and nearly 6 million @everytown supporters. 💪💪💪

Join me in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, August 6, at Chatham University at 7 pm. I’ll be there talking about gun violence, women and advocacy, and my new book Fight Like a Mother. Link in bio.

Posted @withrepost@everytown Gun Sense University is in full force! This morning, @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand leaders heard from some leaders in the gun violence prevention movement: ⠀ ⠀ @shannonrwatts, @MomsDemand founder: "We won’t end gun violence without addressing the systemic racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia and the bigotry that can fuel it."⠀ ⠀ Brenda Moss, whose son Shawn was shot and killed: "When it happened I had two choices: I could stay down and deprive my other two sons of the love they deserved, or I could get up and fight. I will not give up the fight!" ⠀ ⠀ Senator @ChrisMurphyCT: “We’re stronger than the gun lobby now!” ⠀ ⠀ @MikeBloomberg: “Voters want candidates to take strong on gun safety & they are rewarding those that do. Just look at the presidential candidates. They've been trying to one-up each other with their proposals & they take selfies with @MomsDemand volunteers.”⠀ ⠀ Marco Vargas, @southcentralsda leader: "Our students are absorbing new ideas, methods, and practices at each event to create and develop proposals for decreasing gun violence in our communities.”

TODAY’S THE DAY! Every year, @MomsDemand volunteer leaders come together from across the US in one city for our annual training, Gun Sense University. This year, GSU is in DC - and @studentsdemand is here, too. Follow to see all the great images from this year!

I couldn’t figure out why so many toxic males who live in their moms’ basements were making comments on my Instagram page, but then I remembered I’m the @nationalrifleassociation’s worst nightmare.

The fact that every candidate is talking about gun violence during the debates shows it's a defining issue in the 2020 campaign, but a crucial part of the discussion about gun violence was left out last night. The candidates are in Detroit, yet mainly spoke about mass shootings and school shootings. They should be talking more about how gun violence impacts communities of color and their plans to address ALL types of gun violence.

The shooting in Gilroy, California, should be a wake-up call to anyone still on the sidelines. Gun violence in America is political because too many lawmakers allow gun lobbyists to write our nation’s gun laws. One of the most effective things Americans can do to end gun violence is to elect leaders at the local, state, and federal level who will pass common sense gun laws.
