Photo by @Sofia_Jaramillo5 | Sheep are loaded onto a truck at a lambing camp in Mabton, Washington. After spending the winter in barns, sheep are trucked out to various public and private land allotments to feed. Each year between 2,000 and 3,000 H-2A migrant shepherds work in Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, California and Oregon. Most of the shepherds are from Peru or other South American countries. #pnwsheepherders

Photo by @sofia_jaramillo5.| Sheep jump out of a truck as they are let out to graze near Sunnyside, Washington. Sheep have to be moved to new areas every two days to avoid overgrazing. I first learned about sheep herding in the western United States when I was a young kid. I was mountain biking, came around a bend and accidentally crashed into a band of sheep in a forest near Ketchum, Idaho. Ever since then, I've been curious about sheepherding in the American West and continue to work on projects exploring it. Photo by @sofia_jaramillo5.| Sheep huddle together before being loaded onto a truck near Moxee, Washington. Each year, this sheepherding operation follows a seasonal grazing schedule on public and private land allotments. Sheep are set out to graze from early spring to the end of December. Sheep graze in areas all over eastern Washington. I spent over two years working on this part of the project and following sheepherders throughout the farmlands and high mountains of eastern Washington. Really thrilled to be contributing to @natgeotravel and that they have shared some of the PNW Sheepherding project on their platform. I worked on this project for over two years in WA state and it means a lot every time it gets shared. I continue to work on the project now, by exploring different subcultures of Sheepherding in the west. These were the days though.. spending nights under the stars with herders and learning how they live off the land in solitude. ・・ A shepherd's trailer is parked at a ranch near the Teanaway National Forest near Cle Elum, Wash.
