Barbados 1 Penny 1792 Copper, 12.4 grams, 31.5 millimeters In 1625, the first English ship, arrived Barbados and claimed the uninhabited island for England. The s imported into Barbados via trade forts on the African west coast and sold to plantation owners. In 1636, a law declared that all s brought into Barbados, whether African or Amerindian, were to be end for life, which later extended to include their offspring. In 1661 the Barbados code, named An Act for Better Ordering and Governing of Negroes declared. "If any Negro or whatsoever shall offer any violence to any Christian by striking or the like, such Negro or shall for his or her first offence be severely whipped by the Constable. For his second offence of that nature he shall be severely whipped, his nose slit, and be burned in some part of his face with a hot iron. And being brutish s, [they] deserve not, for the baseness of their condition, to be tried by the legal trial of twelve men of their peers, as the subjects of England are. And it is further enacted and ordained that if any Negro or other under punishment by his master unfortunately shall suffer in life or member, which seldom happens, no person whatsoever shall be liable to any fine therefore."
