Welcome to the Art Park! 🎉 Built in collaboration with 5 phenomenal women artists, each representing one of the cities we’re touring the show to: @yvettemayorga repping Chicago, @sopopomo Dallas, @nnekkaa_ Atlanta, @trapxbob Washington DC, and @gdgrlhanski for Toronto (follow them all!!). Love seeing their work come to life on these interactive, geometric forms... it’s always fun reimagining what a canvas can be. 🎨 Mesmerizing video by @phil.yoon 📹 @29Rooms

Some people are told that they aren’t creative. That truly breaks my heart because it just isn’t true. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We all come into this world creative… creativity is core to our humanity. It’s just that many people are discouraged from nurturing that part of themselves. Creativity — like joy, peace, or muscles — needs to be cultivated and worked. It’s a practice. One that is core to our life force, to our self expression, to our connection to the meaning and magic all around us. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ At @29Rooms we aim to create a place that opens people up to their creative potential. A place of permission. A place to explore our creativity, to express ourselves, to explore ourselves, to unleash our imagination and be boundless. That’s our goal and nothing makes me happier than seeing people do that… dancing together, picking up a paint brush for the first time since middle school, writing a note to their childhood self. I love seeing people tap into something deep inside themselves — their creative life force — and come ALIVE.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Repeat after me: I AM CREATIVE. I AM INNATELY CREATIVE. (I’m talking to YOU!) Remember: Creativity is not a badge you win by having a gallery show or by getting picked up by a record label. No credentials needed. Give yourself permission… whatever that means to you. If it’s trying a new beauty look, doodling, experimenting with a recipe, or doing an interpretive dance. Creativity is a state of being that you can always get back to and that is always inside you.

Routinely the day before I have to release work, do a big talk, or present, I filled with anticipation, panic, overthinking, feeling unprepared, self doubt… all my nemeses creep up on me and pounce. Although I try not to submit to spiraling, sometimes I can’t help it.⁣ 😳⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ But on GAME DAY, there is no room for my nemeses. So I have a set of rituals I always do to set me up to deliver on my dres.⁣ ☁️⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 1. When I wake up, I do a quick 10-minute workout to fun music to get the pumping, my head cleared, and the vibe up.⁣ 🎉⁣⁣ ⁣ 2. I put on a face mask or massage my face with a face roller. Putting my best face forward, after all! ⁣🧖🏻‍♀️⁣⁣ ⁣ 3. I write my intentions for the day and center myself in intention and my place of power. To get there, I focus on the people who have helped me, inspired me, and the people who have been moved by the work we do. I remember WHY I do what I do. I remember that pressure is a privilege and that the nerves are my power turning on.⁣ 📝⁣⁣ ⁣ 4. Over coffee and ideally a hearty breakfast, I review my schedule and notes for the day. I remind myself I prepared — that I have all the tools I need inside me. ⁣☕️⁣⁣ ⁣ 5. I gently push away thoughts of doubt, criticism, or anticipation. NOT TODAY! ⁣❌⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ What are your big day to get your head in the ge?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

There is nothing quite like working on something for months, seeing it go from concept to sketch, to rendering, and then finally arriving to see it LIVE and in person! A REALITY!⁣ 🎉 ⁣ Today’s a BIG DAY — we’re in previews for our NEW Expand Your Reality tour and kicking off in one of my favorite cities...CHICAGO (don’t tell the other cities, but I was the most inspired by our Chicago event last year). It’s a city with such a vibrant creative scene and we’re back with a brand new show featuring local artists sharing their new talent and their truths with us. ❤️ The new show features some brand new installations and experiences as well as fan favorites from our shows in NYC and LA. ⁣🎨 ⁣ Chicago, thanks so much for having us back. Doors open tomorrow! 🎟Wheeeee... here we go! @29rooms

When we talk about creativity, we often talk about visionaries — these magical creative creatures who envision the future and know everything that will get them from point A to point B to execute their idea. We imagine that these creatures have “creative control” from start to finish and mold the world in their vision. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ In reality, creativity is so much messier and I find that it’s actually when I relinquish control — when I have a willingness to NOT know what’s going to happen that the real magic happens. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ But relinquishing control can be terrifying. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ A few years ago, I took an improv class and I haven’t stopped talking or thinking about it since. First off, I just loved the discomfort and vulnerability of it — being ridiculous in front a room of strangers, daring to be bad at something publicly, not having any clue what was going to happen, feeling myself push through and grow. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ What was most valuable was that improv taught me so much about TRUST: Trusting myself, trusting the process, trusting that the ideas would come. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Every time I have the inevitable panic that accompanies needing to produce (when my mind is racing with thoughts like “I don’t know what I’m doing” “How will I top what I did last time?” “What if I don’t come up with anything good” etc etc) — I take a breath and remind myself that I know improv, that the ideas will come. ⁣⁣⁣ This relaxes me but is also kind of hilarious because I by no means an improv expert after 6 hours of class. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ The secret is: You know improv too. We all improvise every day of our lives in big and small ways. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ So let’s all get comfy with not knowing the answer, trusting the process, and realize that all the excitement and magic is right in the of it, that gloriously messy middle. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 📝 words @kelel 🎨 by @elliotsalazar for @refinery29

My favorite room in our house is Viva’s bedroom, her Electric Blue Oasis. ⁣⁣💙 ⁣⁣ We moved into our new apartment when Viva was two months old so I got to know her a little bit before I put the room together. Because she’s both peaceful and vivacious, I wanted her room to be a simultaneously soothing and engaging sanctuary for her to imagine. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The walls are vivid blue… the color of sky and sea and tropical fish. The space is filled with objects and art that make you wonder… pieces I’ve collected from artist friends and travels over the years. Lots of wonderful children’s books are starting to fill her golden yellow shelves. I wanted to make her a space that was full of stories.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ As we prepared for her arrival last year, I was on the hunt for a mobile for her future room. My dad loves Calder, so when I was little we used to make mobiles together… sometimes drilling holes in beach finds or household junk, stringing them with thread, and hanging them from driftwood sticks. I’ve always found them magical and — fun fact — slowly moving objects help build babies' visual connections and spacial knowledge (as well as distracting from dreaded diaper changes 😉). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Last summer, I wandered into a friends’ shop @leaderbagco in Biddeford, Maine and saw the most artful mobile hanging in the window… the shapes were Calder-esque but modern and I liked the contrast between classic brass and iridescent plexiglass. I asked about it and found out it was a collaboration between one of my favorite illustrators @lottanieminen (who used to share office space with us at R29) and local Maine artist @lindsayjoystone . When I looked closer, I saw the iridescent dove (the Paloma!) and knew it needed a place in Viva’s room. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Thanks @lolopetitpot x @leaderbagco for coming over a few months ago to take the first photos of Viva’s room and for adding to the story of her space. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

Someone recently told me “you only have 18 summers with your children.” ⁣ ⁣ I was recently home with my parents and asked them what their favorite summer memories were from when we were kids. It was really sweet reminiscing and hearing what meant the most to them… the traditions like going to Funtown usement park to kick off summer every year and going hiking in Acadia to close out the season. The quiet moments like helping my mom in the garden or laying in our driveway and looking at stars. My dad immediately answered that his favorite memory was the time he took me and my teenage friends for a night swim in the estuary near our house when there were phosphorescent creatures lighting up the water… it’s a night that is forever imprinted in my memory as well. It struck me because it was from when I was an age where I was naturally pushing away from my parents and yet this spontaneous, adventurous, wonder-filled evening happened with my friends AND my dad, creating this shared memory and the conspiratorial bond that magic moments cement. ⁣ ⁣ Thinking about that made me feel that 18 summers can be vast, if I present in the little moments. ⁣ ⁣ I only have ONE summer with my daughter as a baby. As usual, I’m full on with work and work travel but I don’t think that prevents me from simultaneously savoring this summer and all it’s nooks and crannies with her. ⁣ ⁣ So, if Viva wakes up at 5AM, I’m heading to the park with her. If it’s gorgeous out when I get home from work, I’m quickly making her bottle, scooping her up, and feeding her dinner outside. And for me personally, even a walk to the train in the morning can be a lovely summer stroll if I stop staring at my phone and look up at the world around me. ⁣ ⁣ 18 summers. It could feel like a countdown clock (it filled me with panic when I first heard it) but I can see that’s it’s also possible to fill a lifetime with every sweet minute and to hold those minutes with you for your lifetime.

My tiny style icon ❤️

New York, New York

Maine, where I grew up, is not the most exuberant place in terms of fashion and makeup (it's the land of LL Bean, after all). ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ It wasn't until I moved to New York, that I really saw people expressing themselves through beauty. My roommate Bobby was a sometimes go-go dancer and friends with a lot of club kids, drag queens, and other incredible nightlife personalities. He scooped me up as his sidekick and we'd go out all the time. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣Often, before a big night, his friends would come over to get ready with us. The group would consult on my outfits… encouraging me to wear my dress upside down, a skirt as a shirt (or a shirt as a hat!) I'd sometimes wear outfits made of duct tape or streamers. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣ For the finishing touches, our friend Astro would give me experimental haircuts with kitchen scissors or a dramatic eye stenciled using a credit card. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Wearing dramatic looks gave me extra bravado to do the big dance moves or sweet talk the bouncer into letting me skip the line. I felt a conduit to a part of my spirit that hadn’t been outwardly expressed before. At that time in my life, I was exploring so much about myself; beauty became a tool for self discovery and an external symbol of internal transformation.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Over the years, my love of getting dressed up has made me more confident in trying things and more excited about the artistic opportunities that makeup can provide. I love the artistry of it and it's become a playground to experiment with new shades of self expression as I constantly explore what it means to be me — made up or makeup free. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 📷 @jinanddana for @refinery29 💄 @caitlinwooters 💇🏻‍♀️ @andrita ☁️ R29 dream team @erinyamagata @catquinn

When I was 19, I landed an internship at City magazine (a now-defunct publication that was known for award-winning photography and design). I later bece photo director.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ That job inextricably altered my life path because it was there that I met @ChristeneBarberich, who was Executive Editor. She started as my boss and mentor and then many years later bece my “work wife,” co-founder, and creative partner in launching @refinery29.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ This month (nearly 20 years after we first started working together!!) Christene and I were honored by @adweek as part of their Creative 100 List “The Most Fascinating People of 2019.” 🎉🎉🎉 It made me think back to how our partnership has evolved and shaped us both creatively. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ One of the things I loved most about our time together at City were the hilarious after-hours brainstorms where everyone felt comfortable throwing out ridiculous ideas. We'd be doubled over with laughter when someone would connect the dots from the joke to a gem of an idea. Boom! Brilliance. It happened again and again. Anyone watching us might have thought we were just around but our best ideas ce from fits of giggles. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ Over the years, I’ve seen how valuable it is to have a partner with really different inspiration points and skills to you. Ever since we first landed in career cahoots, we’ve complemented one another creatively and our areas of expertise have rubbed off on each other, making each of us more rounded creatively. We are inspired by different things and those disparate ways of seeing have created a healthy friction which is where so much magic comes from. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Over the years our partnership has taken many forms — from the early days where we hand-crafted every story together, to now where, by necessity, we divide and conquer. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ No matter what I working on or where I in life, Christene will forever be my sounding board... the person who's opinion I care about most, who adds extra sheen to any idea, and who'll make me laugh while doing it. 📷 @erinyagata
