Guatemala

'High mountain ranges like the legendary Sierra Madre allow coffee to be grown in most regions of Guatemala, and geographic influences such as the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans, tablelands, and high plains combine to create more than 300 microclimates that contribute to the distinct cup profile to be found in every coffee region.⠀ ⠀ Even in the present day, the main activities employed during harvests to select the highest quality beans is hand-picking and sorting, as well as paddling the beans along a narrow channel filled with running water.'⠀ ⠀ 👉 Read the full article on Guatemala by Christina Hesse of @meetlosamigos in the latest issue of Standart. It's a great read, and with excellent photographies by @santibilly. ⠀ ⠀

Denali State Park, Alaska

Well, and how’s your summer going? One of our dear friends and readers from Japan, Billy (@billykodamax) sent us these pictures from his recent ascent to Mt. Denali in Alaska.⠀ ⠀ 21 days without shower didn’t stop Billy from brewing coffee for his co-climbers and carrying Standart on the expedition. And not just an ordinary one!⠀ ⠀ 🔥 Denali is 6,190 (!) meters high, and is the third most prominent and third most isolated peak on Earth, after Mount Everest and Aconcagua.⠀ ⠀ Pretty badass, we say!⠀ ⠀

Has Bean Coffee

'One thing I’ve never done is buy to suit the market; I buy coffee that I can appreciate. ⠀ ⠀ If you try to please everyone, you’ll probably please no one, but if you please yourself, at least one person’s happy.'⠀ ⠀ 👏🏽Clever thoughts of Steven Leighton of @hasbean in the interview with Joanna Alm of @dropcoffee and Standart’s editor Luke Adams in our latest issue.⠀ ⠀ Picture by @i.am.timberline 📸⠀ ⠀

Barista Hustle HQ

'Latte art used to be the domain of specialty coffee vendors, and while this craft has been successfully established as a signature of the third wave, it has been almost universally co-opted by mass chains, and the latte art scene has at times been accused of favouring style over substance.⠀ ⠀ ☝🏽The solution to reconciling art and function is pragmatism—a balance between beautiful latte art and real-world efficiency.'⠀ ⠀ Some of the thoughts of Jeremy Challender (@jemchallender) of @baristahustle in his article on milk in Standart. ⠀ ⠀ What do you think? Leave a comment. 💡⠀ ⠀

London, United Kingdom

'When I was doing stand-up, coffee was liquidated courage. ⠀ ⠀ It didn’t matter if it was bad coffee that had more in common with melted-down plastic; all that was necessary was a hot, steaming, polystyrene cup of something black to tighten the mind in pursuit of my ‘funny muse’. ⠀ ⠀ 🤷‍♂️ As it turns out, however, the ‘funny muse’ I was chasing remained elusive, and if anything—considering the audience reaction—I ended up bottling a ‘painful muse’ instead. ⠀ ⠀ Laughter or not, the pre-show cups of instant or arabica were telling me that it was time to get on that stage and tell some (bad) jokes, come or high water.'⠀ ⠀ 🎬 Take a look at the not-so-obvious links between coffee and stand-up comedy in an article by Gareth May in the latest Standart.⠀ ⠀

This issue of Standart we have partnered up with Cole Torode (@torodeo), the Canadian barista champion, who placed third at the 2019 World Barista Championship in Boston, and his team at @rossocffeeroasters, one of our favourite Canadian specialty coffee roasters.⠀ ⠀ The beans we picked for you come from Rwanda—it’s Rugali natural coffee that is juicy and slightly syrupy, with flavours of stewed citrus that reminds us of marmalade.⠀ ⠀ It's delicious. 👌⠀ ⠀ Together with @standartmag our subscribers always get a small bag of specialty coffee selected from prominent international roasters, and exclusively reserved for our subscribers.⠀ ⠀ Thanks for the picture, @jukka_jii and @bheathertownsend!⠀ ⠀

On the Farm with Doca 🌱⠀ ⠀ "I remember always being surrounded by coffee farms, since I was little. But I took my very first job in coffee when I was 13. ☕️⠀ ⠀ "So I’ve been working with it for 40 years now. I do pretty much everything: picking, weeding, fertilizing, loading trucks..."⠀ ⠀ - Maria Aparacida Lopes, 53 years old⠀ ⠀ Often when coffee media profiles coffee farmers, it's the farm owners we wind up talking about. Who, then, are the people actually doing the farm labour? 🤔 ⠀ ⠀ Maria Aparacida Lopes, or Doca, graciously stepped away from the busy Brazilian harvest for a few minutes to speak with us so we could find out.⠀ ⠀⠀ 🇧🇷 Read an interview with her in Standart issue 6 and find out more about the reality of working on a coffee farm.
